Frida
For Frida Kahlo, the first figure in this series, the work focuses on the depth of her personality: a woman who fought, was passionate, and deeply committed to her art as well as to her life. Far from commercial and simplified images, this portrait tries to give Frida back her intensity and complexity.
Like the cameo, the piece presents the profile of the artist whose features are marked by the trials of life. This piece, cast in deliberately devitrified glass, questions the material. Framed by a glass mosaic background evoking the Casa Azul, her refuge and creative sanctuary, this coloured background echoes the liveliness of her world and the Mexican cultural roots that nourished her work so markedly.
The frame, on the other hand, reveals the two facets of the character. At the top, two connected hearts – in reference to the painting “The Two Fridas” – dominate the composition. From these hearts flow the veins which feed glass leaves: on the left, the leaves are traversed with red veins, symbols of suffering and mixed vitality; On the right, accompanying the gaze of Frida, the veins of the leaves are green, metaphor of her unwavering hope. Emblematic elements of her self -portraits, such as the thorns collar, the butterflies, or the dead hummingbird, are interpreted in ceramic and glass, transposing the symbols she used to tell her pain and her survival. The background of the frame is a landscape in relief, made of black stone powder, serving as a support for pictorial work with rich oil pastels.
This scenery suggests the sensitive and tormented terrains that she has gone through, both physically and emotionally.
By the richness of the materials and the multiplicity of the techniques used, this work seeks to restore the depth of Frida, a whole and fiery woman, traversed by wounds, love, struggles and light.
Homage to Frida Kahlo thus captures the inner strength and resilience that shaped her legacy, creating an intimate and authentic portrait, while paying tribute to the indomitable soul that inhabited this great artist.
